Shifting Gears: Why I’m Diving Back Into Flipping Storage Units

Sometimes, the best path forward isn’t the one you planned—it’s the one that actually gets you where you need to go. When I started refinishing furniture, I loved the creativity, the transformation, and the sense of accomplishment. But lately, I’ve had to face a hard truth: the money is just too slow. That’s why I’m shifting gears and diving headfirst back into storage unit flipping. Flipping storage units is where it’s at for me.

The Reality Check

Furniture refinishing is rewarding, but it takes time. Finding the right pieces, prepping them, painting, sealing—it’s a process. And even when the final result is beautiful, selling can be slow, with buyers often looking for a bargain. Right now, I need quick flips, not long waiting periods. Storage units provide that.

The Process

While I stayed home with the kids, my husband and son tackled three storage units. They handled the heavy lifting and digging, which was a huge help, and I got updates throughout the day. Flipping storage units is always a gamble—you never know if you’ll find treasure or trash—but this time, the risk paid off.

Overview of the Finds

We scored big with these units:

  • 2 bed frames – Always in demand and quick sellers.
  • 10 (yes, TEN) coffee tables – Perfect for quick flips; people are always looking for affordable furniture.
  • 3 dressers (including 2 stunning pieces) – These will be showstoppers; I’ll share pictures of the standout ones soon!
  • A washer and dryer – High-value items that should sell fast.
  • A beautiful dining set – Great for families looking for a budget-friendly upgrade.
  • End tables, nightstands, and artwork – Smaller pieces that can sell quickly to fill in the profit gaps.

This haul is exactly the kind of inventory we need right now—functional, desirable pieces that people are actively searching for.

Moving Forward

I’ll be focused on sorting, photographing, listing, and selling these items in the coming days. The goal is to flip them fast and keep the momentum going. While refinishing will always have a place in my heart, storage unit flipping is what’s keeping us afloat right now—and that’s what matters most.

If you want to see behind-the-scenes photos, updates on what sells first, and more flipping stories, stay tuned.

Boxes of useable items from flipping storage units that I'm giving away.

This is just a portion of the stuff that I give away. It’s all good useable stuff but there is no way I can list every item. I do a quick pick through and get any high value items (I stick to about $30 and up) and then leave everything else for some friends that also resell. They do not like listing furniture and I don’t like listing the small stuff so it works out. It also helps that they do flea markets so the small stuff really helps them out.

Lots of trash piled up waiting to be taken to the dumpster.

Trash

There is so much trash that goes along with storage unit flipping. You would not believe the amount of trash people PAY to store…well I guess they don’t pay. Ha!
